Beginnings

The Truth of Genesis

In this series, we start at the very Beginning, the book of Genesis, to learn not only where we came from, but also many foundational principles that inform our lives today in 2016. For the first few weeks we will struggle through the issue of Epistemology…what is truth? What is the basis of truth and how we can stand firmly on the book of Genesis as God’s revelation to us of how all things began. How we can trust His Word as being truth, without error, kept for us through the ages? Is it just a ‘religious leap of faith’, or is there evidence to back it all up?

A Colossal Backfire - Genesis 11:1-9

As we turn to Genesis 11 we come to the story of the Tower of Babel. It doesn't take long to realize that the story is not really about a tower, but about the heart of Mankind. The lesson is clear: Prideful rebellion against the God of creation will always reap unintended consequences.

A Bigger Picture - Genesis 10:1-32

As we approach this interesting chapter of scripture that is often referred to as the 'Table of Nations', we recognize that the lessons from us come more in the form of application. We see that getting the Big Picture of 'where things come from' can help us stay on guard against temptation and sin in the midst of the messiness of life.

Nothing's Changed - Genesis 9:18-29

Having seen Noah's obedience, God now allows us to see his failure as well. Not so that we get caught up in the unrevealed details but rather to demonstrate how we can show grace to others. Nothing's changed...sin always ruins, but more importantly Nothing's changed in that God will Redeem!!

The World Undone, Undone - Genesis 8:1-22

Genesis 8 is the account of God undoing His judgment of the Flood found in chapter 7. We see that God is the only one who a reverse what He's done, all the while moving forward in history. We also find a type of Jesus in the story of Noah.

The World Undone - Genesis 7:1-24

A study of Genesis 7 and the Flood of Noah, should not focus on demonstrating the factual authenticity of what happened in Noah's day but rather, how will we model Noah's faith in our day.

Lessons from a Big Ol' Box - Genesis 6:11-22

Often when we turn to Genesis 6 we are intrigued with the flood, but when we really study we find that Genesis 6 is as much about those whom God saves as it is about what God destroys. This lesson focus' on the fact that God preserved the memory of the Ark not as an object of curiosity and speculation, but rather, that we might marvel in seeing God save and be spurred to dynamic faith.

Our Grieved God - Genesis 6:5-8

As an introduction to the flood in Genesis 7, we find not a God who is angry, resentful of sin and quick to judge sin. Rather we find a God who grieves the destruction of sin, a God who feels, a God who judges and a God who gives Grace to those who walk in His ways.

Who's Your Daddy? - Genesis 6:1-4

Mankind was designed to live as the Image and Likeness of God, under the authority of God as the children of God, but what do we find as we turn to Genesis 6? We find that because of sin, mankind descended into a race obsessed with desire, dominance and distinction, not living like their Daddy at all.

Flyover Country - Genesis 5:1-32

Just as the middle section of our nation is often referred to as 'Flyover Country', so too, the genealogies of the Bible are often considered the same. We know they are there, but seldom stop to read them and meditate on what they contain. This study will spend time in the first genealogy of the Bible, Genesis 5.

Banished...but Blessed? - Genesis 3:7-24

Having spent four weeks on chapter 3 of Genesis, studying the fall of Mankind into sin, it can get pretty depressing. This study examines the number of blessings that can be found in the midst of God's Judgment. Were we banished from Eden? Absolutely, but there are many blessings embedded in this chapter as well.

Consequences - Genesis 3:7-21

What is Sin? - Genesis 3:1-7

What exactly is Sin? We usually are able to respond with something pretty close to the truth but this morning we want to examine more deeply just exactly what the scriptures say about sin. Unfortunately, it's worse than we think.

The Serpent Still Speaks - Genesis 3:1-6

While we're no longer dealing with talking snakes, the truth of the matter is the Serpent of old, Satan, the Adversary of God is still speaking today. He longs to deceive and lie all for the purposes of opposing the plan of God. Make no mistake, he's a hater...He hates God and he hates the people of God. In our study, we'll see that Satan is strong, but we'll also learn that we can resist him, and when we do...he will flee! Greater is He that is in us, than he that is in the world!

At the Center of Sin - Genesis 3:1-5

From its inception, sin has always been a direct frontal attack on the character of God. While Genesis 3:1-5 relates a conversation between the Snake and Eve, at the focus of the discussion was neither the Snake nor Eve, but God. Therefore, it appears safe to say that at the center of our Sin, is the Character of our God.

The 7th Day - Genesis 2:1-3

How often do we read about the 7th day and keep right on going thinking something like, "Yeah, God rested...not sure what that means but I think I'll take a nap Sunday afternoon"? When we take the time to really examine it, we find that the 7th Day is not about what we do on a certain day in the week, but rather, joining God in celebrating what He did and acknowledging what we need.

Creation Speaks, pt2 - Genesis 1:3-2:3

Sometimes we get so caught up in all the controversy surrounding the contents of Genesis 1 that we forget to consider the actual purpose of the chapter. It's not about giving us the details about creation, although it does. Genesis 1 is more than just a historical narrative about creation…It’s a powerful proclamation about the God who did the creating.

And God said... pt2 - Genesis 1:3-23

We here at Resonate believe that the written Word of Scripture is God Breathed, error free and unable to err, the complete Divine Word intended for us today. We hold to this position primarily because of the character of our God and the testimony of Jesus, our Savior. There is also a host of supporting evidence to hold this position as well.

And God said... pt1 - Genesis 1:3-23

God brought about the formation of creation through His spoken Word. This word was not just a neutral grouping of vocabulary words, but was the extension of God Himself. Can we believe what Moses wrote in Genesis is accurate? Yes, because it is a Divine Word. We believe that the written Word is the God berthed, error free, complete Divine Word intended for us today.

In the beginning... pt 2 - Genesis 1:1-2

As presuppositional, young earth theists, to state that God created the world and that it is a relatively young world is not a crazy position held by zealous Jesus people, but a reasonable position, based on God's word and able to account for scientific evidence. We hold this not to shout that we are right...but that our God is the glorious greater of all things.

In the beginning God... - Genesis 1:1

That the Bible begins with the words 'In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth', clearly communicates that God is on His throne at the center of all things. It means that God exists, He is an active God and His creation has purpose.
